University of South Dakota
Hi! I’m Chelsea. I love to travel, Africa and Asia have been my favorite experiences so far. I’m a first generation American, my family is from England and Scotland.
I graduated with my BS in Psychology in 2015, and worked within an outpatient mental health clinic. I began to understand the difficulty that patients faced when seeking care and I hoped to one day make a difference. I am now a BSN student at USD with goals of working in the field again after graduation. I am determined to change the stigma that mental health care carries, and hope that one day a person with depression can be treated with the same respect as someone with the flu.
We are ecstatic to have Chelsea as an AHEC Scholar and excited to watch her achieve her goals! The AHEC Scholars program is designed for college-level health profession students interested in supplementing their education by gaining relevant knowledge and experiences in rural and underserved areas of SD. Program activities cover the following six Core Topics: Interprofessional Education, Behavioral Health Integration, Social Determinants of Health, Cultural Competency, Practice Transformation, and Current and Emerging Health Issues.
