Monthly AHEC Scholar Profile - November 2024
– By #Annette Hill
Meet one of our 2023 AHEC Scholars! This month we are excited to feature Carol Matt, an RN student at Western Dakota Technical College! My name is Carol Matt. I grew up as the youngest of seven children on a farm north of Aberdeen. After graduating from Frederick High School, I attended court reporting school at the Stenotype Institute of South Dakota in Sioux Falls. After graduation from SISD in 1988, I worked as a freelance court reporter, then opened my own business editing and proofreading transcripts for other reporters until 2013. My favorite type of testimony to take was in the medical, construction, and mining industries.
From 2013 to 2017, I worked as an administrative assistant in our sons’ school system. When I visited a friend at the Monument Hospice House in Rapid City, I felt a strong pull to join the healthcare profession. I was hired as a PCC at the Hospice House and worked there while I completed my prerequisite classes for the LPN program at Western Dakota Technical College. I graduated from WDTC in December 2020 and was hired as a staff LPN with Monument Health Dermatology. Currently, I work part-time for MH Dermatology while finishing my prerequisites for the RN program at WDT. My goal is to graduate with my RN degree in December 2024.
